The US has cleared the sale of 22 unmanned Guardian drones to India, governmental sources said today, a deal being termed as a “game changaer” ahead of Prime Minister ’s visit here for his maiden meeting with President Donald Trump. The decision has been communicated to the Indian government and the manufacturer by the State Department yesterday, according to the informed governmental sources. “This is the first very significant sign of the Trump administration being more result oriented in its relationship with India compared to Obama administration,” a source told PTI. The sources, who requested anonymity as the deal has not been formally announced, said the sale of 22 predator drones being manufactured by General Atomics is “a game changer” for US-India relations as it operationalises the status of “major defence partner”. The designation of India being a “major defence partner” was decided by the previous Obama Administration, and formally approved by the . The Indian Navy had made the request for this intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform last year. Anti-hunger activist Ankit Kawatra, who has been committed to solving hunger and malnutrition in India, is all set to receive the prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders Award with 60 others from all 53 Commonwealth countries. In 2014, Mr Kawatra quit his corporate business job and founded a not for profit organisation Feeding India that works towards solving problems of hunger, malnutrition and food wastage, mainly by redistributing extra food from restaurants, canteens, households, corporates etc. “India wastes 67 million tones food every year which is more than the national output of Britain. I believe that this is a landmark for both countries, especially since UK and India have a shared history on so many fronts,” Mr Kawatra said. Earlier this year, the best of British and Indian culture was celebrated by the Queen at a glittering Buckingham Palace reception attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to launch the UK-India Year of Culture 2017. According to Mr Kawatra, an Indian’s presence at the Buckingham Palace today “symbolizes the long way the two countries have come, and proves once again, how we can do so much more if we work together peacefully”
